Good afternoon, Advocate,

Advocates for Ohio’s Future held a news conference today highlighting the need to prioritize any new revenue for the safety net. Margaret Hulbert and Scott Britton both gave remarks. We were joined by our health and human service partners across the state, consumers of these services, and Rev. Deniray Mueller of the Faith Coalition for the Common Good. If you’re interested in reading our news release, you can download it here.

Jennifer Guthrie of Westerville, Ohio, is a former consumer who shared her story:

In 2004, Jennifer became unable to work due to complications from mental illness. At that time, she reluctantly applied for and received Social Security Disability benefits. Through treatment, support, and hope instilled by her counselor at a community behavioral health center in Greene County, Jennifer decided to return to school to pursue a Master's Degree in Rehabilitation Counseling. She graduated this past August and now works at the Center of Vocational Alternatives in Columbus assisting individuals with mental illnesses in obtaining and maintaining meaningful employment.

She said, "Without the treatment I received at the local community behavioral health center and the services I received from the Bureau of Vocational Rehabilitation, none of this would have been possible."

Advocates for Ohio's Future needs your help to reinforce the message we delivered at the news conference. We also need your help to share the stories of real people, like Jennifer's, and raise the voice of struggling Ohioans.
