Dear Advocate,

We need your help to make protection of Ohio's children and seniors a state priority. Will you save the date for this Thursday to participate in our statewide call-in day? We provide an email template following this message you can use to get your network involved. Please let me know if you plan to share the information to get your network involved.

Background
At Advocates for Ohio's Future, we believe all Ohioans should feel safe in their homes and communities. Unfortunately, many children and seniors are abused, neglected and exploited across Ohio.

In April, the Ohio House of Representatives passed House Bill 483, which includes $20 million to strengthen protection for children and older adults. The House version includes:

  • a $10 million investment in Adult Protective Services to improve the state’s capacity to protect older Ohioans from abuse, neglect, and exploitation and help ensure Ohio seniors live with safety and dignity.
  • an additional $10 million for Child Welfare to build on improvements and outcomes for over 100,000 children and their families and address critical disparities among counties to provide child welfare services.

If finalized, the Adult Protective Service allocation would be nearly four times more than the state has ever provided for Adult Protective Services. The child welfare funds would also be the first new state child welfare dollars in nine years.

We need your help to work with the Ohio Senate to make sure that the Senate decides to make these critical investments. You can also help us build support for additional investment to keep children and seniors safe.

How You Can Help
State lawmakers need to hear from you and from constituents all across Ohio that we support protecting our children and seniors. I include a draft email below you can send to your organization / network right now to get your community involved in the call-in day this Thursday.

Will you let me know if you plan to spread the word to your network?

Thanks for sharing the plan with your community and joining us in advocating for safe communities in Ohio.

Will Petrik and Gail Clendenin

Hi {{First Name}},

We need your help to make protection of Ohio's children and seniors a state priority. Will you save the date for this Thursday to participate in a statewide call-in day?

How You Can Help
Join the statewide call-in day this Thursday!

Will you take a couple minutes out of your day on Thursday to make one call to your state senator to communicate your support for strengthening protection for children and seniors in Ohio?

Instructions for making the call are below.

Step 1: Get Your Senator’s Phone Number
Find the phone number for your state senator at:
http://www.ohiosenate.gov/members/contacting-your-senator

Step 2: Make One Call
Use the script below during your phone call to ask your senator for their support. When you call, don’t be surprised if you speak to an aide or staff person in the senator’s office or to their voice mail. Please still use this script to make your request.

Phone Script:

Hello, my name is ____________ and I live in ____(city name or address)___.

I am calling to ask you to support children and seniors in House Bill 483.

I believe seniors in Ohio should be able to live with safety and dignity. Our state needs to do more to protect older Ohioans from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. The Ohio House added $10 million in HB 483 for Adult Protective Services. This is a great first step, and I urge you to support an additional $10 million investment to help ensure Ohio seniors live with safety and dignity.

I also believe Ohio needs to ensure our children and youth have a safe and permanent family to become healthy, educated and competitive adults. The Ohio House added $10 million in HB 483 to address critical disparities among counties to provide child welfare services. I urge you to provide an additional $10 million investment to ensure equal access to services in all counties and improve outcomes for children and families across the state.

I urge the senator to support both issues. Will the senator bring this up in the caucus?

Thank you for helping make Ohio a great place for all Ohioans to live and work.
