Dear Advocate,

Back in December, you joined a webinar about Ohio’s juvenile justice system and how it affects Ohio children. Today, you have a chance to help kids avoid falling into the system.

Too many Ohio students are disconnected from their schools and involved in juvenile court because they are missing school or they are expelled for non-violent offenses.

Today, call your state Representative and Senator to support House Bill 410, which would change Ohio's truancy and school discipline laws to keep more kids out of the formal juvenile justice system and in school.

Call to keep kids and out of the justice system

Here is a step-by-step process to use for contacting your state representative and senator:

Step 1: Identify your state Representative and Senators using your zip code.
Step 2: Call your Representative and Senator using the following script:

“Hello! I am calling today to support HB 410, which would keep Ohio students in school and out of juvenile courts. Right now Ohio’s laws make it too easy for students to get suspended or expelled or referred to the juvenile court system for missing school. H.B. 410 would make sure all of Ohio’s students and families get the support they need to stay on track, in school, and out of the juvenile courts.
I’m asking for [Representative or Senator] to support H.B. 410 and to make sure it addresses students who miss school and school discipline issues. Thank you.”

When you call the office, you'll likely speak with a legislative aide, who will pass the message on to their boss.

Step 3: Log your call here! Let us know how it went.

Step 4: Share your support on social media. Tweet to leadership in the House and Senate and the using the following tweets:

  • Ohio leadership: Ohio students need your support for #HB410 @RepPelanda @repamstutz @RepSears @KeithFaber @LarryObhof @TomPattonOH
  • Thank you to @andrewbrenner @RezabekOH43 @RepBillHayes @peggylehner and @Thomas4Ohio for leading the charge on #HB410 for Ohio students!
